So our next key principle is what we call a principle of communication and we talk about this one sort of quite a lot right. Because one of my favourite quotes is the problem with communication is the illusion that’s been achieved right. So we’re communicating we’re trying to get an idea across because we want that idea to be executed then there’s a couple of different things that we need to make sure we have so that it’s being properly communicated so it will drive the behaviour that we’re looking for okay. So the first one is we need to understand what’s the context, what’s the environment or the domain of relevance that we’re kind of talking about. So we’re talking about money, we’re talking about resource, we’re talking about wealth, we don’t you know what are we talking about, are we talking about social interactions or economies or investments or any other things. We need to be really clear about what’s the context because within that context we need to have some definitions, right, we need to understand what the terms we’re dealing with because it’s those definitions, definitions, again one of our principles is definition articulate beliefs, and it’s beliefs that drive our behaviour and our behaviour that determines our results, right? So, the definitions, we need clarity and precision around the terms so that we understand exactly what we’re talking about, right? So we can think of communication as a combination of a particular context and the definitions within that particular environment, that context, that will then ultimately drive our thinking and therefore our behaviour. – So is it the definitions in the context or is it how we convey definitions in context? – A little bit of both, but the definitions are contextual. Okay, so a particular term, we might use the term asset, for example. So asset has different definitions. Okay, now depending on the context, that particular definition is very good or very bad. Okay, so how we define it how we think about it. Okay. If we give an asset the term, for example, that you know, probably a better example might be something like liability, right? So we might determine a particular, like a debt, we might determine a debt is a liability. Okay. We define it as liability because it’s something, it’s resources owed to somebody. Okay. Now in one context, that might be less than ideal or even bad. We really don’t want to have that. It should be minimised in this particular context, right? But in a different context, right, it might be something of value or it might be of proportion value, i.e. having that debt while on its own might be a negative, the fact that it allows us to have something that’s of greater benefit than the benefits sacrificed, if you like, or traded for that, means that overall we’re better off. Okay, so an example that would be, we go to the bank, we borrow a heap for money, but allows us to buy a home. Okay, and so the question, we know the bank, a million dollars, is that a good idea? Well, contextually depends, right? If you’ve got no income and no assets, it’s a terrible idea. Okay, if it’s to fund a, you know, all expenses paid trip around the world, and you’ve got no job on your back, could be a terrible idea, right? But if it’s to buy the family home that you and your children are gonna live in for the next 15, 20 years, and you’re gonna raise a family, and it’s gonna be part of your community, Could be the greatest thing you ever do. Does that make sense? So again, the context is really important when it comes down to the terms and then the definition of those terms, right? But the reason we use those definitions so we know precisely what it is we’re talking about so that we understand precision, right? So not just the measurement, but what relative range. So is a million dollars a good amount or a bad amount, right? And is a good amount because it’s your home and relative to everything else, mean OZ is fine and a million to two is fine or is it anywhere between you know nine hundred and one point one is really so precision think of precision is not just a specific measure but also the potential range of that measure is important as well right so sometimes a range is important sometimes it’s just this thing means this term because it drives our thinking in this way does that make sense so when we’re communicating something we want to make sure that we’re communicating to context here we’re talking about this and within that context these things mean these things. And a really good example is if you look at the way the military operate. So the military operate with very defined terms, often down to three-letter acronyms. And because everyone knows what those three-letter acronyms mean, not just in terms of they know what each letter stands for, but they know what each word means as well, with a high degree of precision. So you can spew out a bunch of commands, which is seven or eight three-letter acronyms and 10,000 people know exactly what to do. Does that make sense? So that’s really what they mean by military precision, right? It’s that communication and everything else is contained in, you understand all the things underneath that, that if I give you the three-letter acronyms, you can put that together. You know what that means and you know not just the definition of each of the things, but how they interact with other things because you understand the context. Whereas you take someone who’s been in the military, stick them in a civilian environment, and they start spreading all these three-letter acronyms, and people have no idea what they’re… And the same thing, all industries have their own jargon for that purpose, right, is because their knowledge economises. We know what this means. We can communicate a huge amount of information really quickly and precisely in this environment. Go to a different environment, they’re either confusing or don’t mean anything. Does that make sense? So communication’s obviously crucially important because if we don’t understand what it is we’re talking about, then you can’t alter the beliefs and behaviours the results that we’re talking about. So that’s why context is really important and we spend a lot of time drilling into that and therefore we can set our definitions really clearly. So that’s what we mean by communication.
